On Wednesday this week I went to a local public school her in my city called Sergio Fayad to give a presentation about British slang. It was a lot of fun, quite a few of the students knew me from the last semester as I was at the school last semester to talk about the difference between the two cultures of the UK and Brasil and how it was to live here in Brasil after living in the UK for all of my life. I really like going to this school, I don’t really have a lot of contact with public schools as both of the schools I work at are private so its really nice to get a different audience once in a while
I had a small game already prepared to play with them and started the presentation (with another teacher whose mom gave class to the students to translate for me when I got stuck) talking about slang and swear words and how swear words that were considered really offensive a few years ago are now very commonplace, words such as shit, arse, fuck, etc. This part was quite short as the class time is only 50 minutes. The game involved some flashcards that We held up and mimed the slang expression to see if the students could match it to the Portugues translation we had provided for them. The mimes had to be a bit creative at times but it was good fun. The Portugues translations I had help with from a book called Slang by Jack Scholes, English expressions and slangs are terrible to try to translate but the book gave me a few ideas
I posted a few photos of the presentation online at my website at www.johnbrasil.110mb.com/photos/photos.php The students asked me to go back again, guess I’d better start preparing the next one
